Guide Review - Giro G10MX

In addition to being warmer than the traditional snowboard hat, today's helmets are stylish and packed with 21st century technology. With adjustable vents, an "in form" fit system that locks the helmet to the back of the head, and an adjustable visor, the G10MX is an all-terrain, all-weather machine. I reviewed the G10MX in the small size (52-55.5cm), but it also comes in medium (55.5-59) and large (59-62.5).

The helmet fit my head well enough to start, but then I discovered the "in form fit system" dial in the back. The system works by gripping the bones at the base of the skull, and let me tell you, it works very well! With the system cranked down and the helmet unbuckled, I could shake and nod my head vigorously without the helmet going anywhere. Buckling the chin strap ensures the helmet will stay where it should in order to provide maximum protection.

The adjustable vents and removable ear flaps are great for early and late season days when the temperature is above freezing. Keep 'em closed on the way down and your head stays nice and warm; open 'em up in the lift line and your head won't overheat. Not only are the ear flaps removable, they are also interchangeable with Giro's Tuneups headphone systems, which allow an MP3 player and/or cellphone to be piped in through the ear flaps.

My only complaint with this helmet is the removable visor makes it difficult to prop goggles up on the front of the helmet, as many people do when entering the lodge or standing around the base of the mountain. While I eventually learned to live with the visor, it's also easily removed.
