Guide Review - Giro Bad Lieutenant
The Giro Bad Lieutenant leaves no doubt as to its purpose. The style of this snowboard helmet screams snowboarding, and judging by its popularity on the slopes, the snowboarding world has stood up and taken notice. Military-inspired graphics like fatigue green and digi camo (a snow camouflage color scheme) add to the "Bad Lieutenant" image.
The helmet features a hardshell construction that ensures maximum durability no matter where on the mountain you take it. The helmet lacks vents (adjustable or otherwise), a common feature on many other helmets. The exclusion of vents is both a blessing and a curse. The helmet is supremely warm, which is great in the dead of winter, but tends to lead to overheating when the temperatures rise in the spring. Fortunately, the ear pads are removable, which helps somewhat with overheating.
I tested the Bad Lieutenant in the small (53.5-55cm) size, and the fit was excellent. With the chin strap tightened comfortably, the helmet stayed in place and was comfortable. Due to the motorcycle style, some goggles may mesh better than others with this helmet, so bring your goggles with you when you try on this helmet.
As a winter helmet, the Bad Lieutenant does its job well, keeping the wearer safe and warm. The lack of vents, however, can become an issue in warmer conditions. Consider the conditions you ride in before purchasing this helmet.
