Kaitlyn Farrington Background:

The story of how Kaitlyn Farrington’s became a professional snowboarding is unlike any other. She grew up in the tiny town of Bellevue, Idaho, on her family’s cattle ranch. Kaitlyn didn’t have enough money to travel to the big mountain competitions that she longed to compete in, so she was forced to sell a few of the family cows to fund her snowboard trips.

Unlike many professional snowboarders, Kaitlyn didn’t start snowboarding at the age of six, nor did she grow up in a big mountain community. Her roots were in a small farming town and she didn’t even strap a board on her feet until the fifth grade. A few years later, in ninth grade, she joined her school’s snowboard club.

In 2008 Kaitlyn was asked to join U.S. Snowboarding’s Rookie Team. That was the season that jumpstarted her competitive snowboarding career. After a number of visits to the podium, she ended the season with a silver medal in halfpipe at the Junior Worlds competition.

Kaitlyn Farrington’s McTwists, cab maneuvers, and 900s proved that she could not only hang with the best girls in snowboarding, but that she was one of them. In 2010, she proved she belonged in the big leagues by taking first place in halfpipe at the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix and bringing home the gold in superpipe at the Winter X Games Europe.

The peak of Kaitlyn Farrington’s career may very well be her qualification for the halfpipe competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Kaitlyn Farrington Career Highlights:

Aside from being the first female snowboarder ever to land a backside 900, Kaitlyn Farrington has achieved some incredible feats in the sport of snowboarding. In 2010 alone, she won the Winter X Games Europe, the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix and the Aspen Snowmass Open.

By the end of 2012, Farrington was a Dew Tour Breckenridge gold medalist, and was named the U.S. Grand Prix Overall Champion. In 2013, she took fifth place at the 2013 World Cup at Sochi and fourth place at the World Championships.

Needless to say, selling the family cows to kick-start her snowboarding career paid off.

Kaitlyn Farrington Off the Mountain:

Kaitlyn Farrington swam competitively for 11 years before becoming a pro snowboarder, and she still loves being in the water. She likes surfing, riding her bike, and hanging out with her cat Thumper.

Like most riders, her favorite times on the mountain are those spent riding with her friends - who she says are her biggest inspiration in the sport.
