Snowboard god and all-around action sports rockstar Shaun White will once again be going for the gold tonight, only this time, there won't be snow anywhere near him. White returns to ESPN's Summer X-Games in Los Angeles to showcase his two-sport skills, dropping in at the Skateboard Vert competition in the Nokia Center tonight between 7-11 p.m. EDT. The Flying Tomato (a nickname, by the way, that White hates...sorry, Shaun!) already owns gold, silver, and bronze medals from previous Summer X-Games contests, and according to an article on ESPN.com, he's a serious threat to add to his medal count this evening.
Taking a page out of his winter success, sponsor Target and friend Tony Hawk combined to get White a private skate halfpipe to practice in recently. He showed up with a list of tricks he wanted to become reacquainted with, and as ESPN.com reports, he appears to have accomplished everything on his list, including a fakie frontside 540. Reports confirm that White was one of the strongest and most consistent skaters in practice so far, and no less an authority than back-to-back reigning champ Pierre Luc Gagnon has said, "Shaun's skating really well."
Rumors of White attempting a 1080 (which would be a first on a skateboard) during the Skateboard Vert Best Trick competition tonight appear to be just that - rumors. White himself has said he's "not there yet," and will be focusing solely on the Vert competition.
