Oops. Olympic Halfpipe Bronze Medalist Scotty Lago left the Olympic village in Vancouver Friday after risqué photos of a fan kissing and biting his newly acquired medal surfaced on celebrity gossip site TMZ.com. The fact that he was wearing a "Team USA" t-shirt in the photo probably didn't help. Lago reportedly decided on his own to head home, rather than wait around for an official USOC ruling on the incident.
I'm impressed the kid had the ability to foresee the USOC getting involved, but it's kind of sad he had to be put in that place at all. Yes, he's a young snowboarder who isn't used to dealing with fame and certainly isn't used to walking around with a piece of Olympic hardware on his person. That being said, he shouldn't have been forced to leave the Games which he worked so hard to get to.
He apologized. Get over it. It's not like he was involved in a vote fixing scandal. Or a bribery incident relating to where the Games would be hosted. Or a slew of other scandals involving the staid old people that truly run and benefit from the Olympics. Here was a kid celebrating the way kids do. Was it proper? Not exactly, but it also wasn't Michael Phelps ripping a bong. Give Scotty Lago a break!
