Skiers and snowboarders that frequent nearby ski areas like Stratton, Okemo, and Killington have no doubt noticed the tiny restaurant (let's face it, with a name like Smokin' Bowls, these guys have obviously figured out their marketing angle!) that serves up fresh soups, breads and chili, all easily eaten on the go. It's the Vermont version of fast food!
Unfortunately, Smokin' Bowls burned down sometime last weekend. Although police have yet to make a determination as to the cause of the fire, the fact that the cash register (which was empty - the perp should've laid off the pipe before planning this one, don't ya think?) was found broken and tossed into the field behind the business leads this snowboarder to believe something smells kinda skunky here...
The good news, however, is that Smokin' Bowls will be making a comeback in time for the upcoming ski and snowboard season. According to an article in the Brattleboro Reformer, owners Sarah and Ryan James plan to rebuild the Rockingham location in time for the ski season rush. These hippies are no slackers, either - they'll also be opening a second location at the intersection of Routes 30 and 11, near Stratton, this season.
I never got the chance to experience what Smokin' Bowls was like last season - I have a job, after all, and couldn't be bothered with the distraction. That's certainly going to change this winter, however - I plan on stopping at the soup shack regularly! Look here for a review in a few months, sports fans.
