I'm fast becoming a believer regarding beginner's luck. Despite being an AASI certified snowboard instructor, I'd never run gates (racing) on a board until this past Saturday's Connecticut Ski Council Winter Carnival. The Carnival, which was held at Okemo Mountain Resort in Ludlow Vermont, featured several races, plus fun events like Volleyball on Snow, a Tug-O-War, and a Fun Race.
I entered the Snowboard Race for kicks, never expecting to do well - lo and behold, I won! My time of 1:03.34 was three tenths better than the next fastest competitor, and two seconds ahead of fellow Okemo snowboard instructor George Stepson (George, if you're reading this - I thought you had me, dude!). Although I've never raced on a board before, this experience has me hooked - I'll be back for more next year!
