Winter Predictions from The Old Farmer's Almanac

Tuesday September 9, 2008
In an era of Doppler, Super Doppler, and (my personal favorite) Super-Cali-Fragilistic-Expiali-Doppler, winter predictions from The Old Farmer's Almanac still have the power to make skiers and snowboarders stand up and take notice. The 216 year-old Almanac recently published its 2008-2009 winter outlook, with potentially good news for winter lovers across the U.S.

As the oldest continuously published periodical in North America, the New Hampshire-based Old Farmer's Almanac (not to be confused with The Farmer's Almanac, which comes out of Maine) has gained near-cult status amongst skiers and snowboarders. Using a "secret formula developed by Almanac founder Robert B. Thomas in 1792," the Almanac claims 80% accuracy over the years.

This year's outlook sees below-normal temperatures and normal to slightly above-normal precipitation for the resort-heavy Northeast and Rocky Mountain regions, while the Pacific Northwest and Upper Midwest regions experiencing a warmer than normal winter with below-normal levels of precipitation. Check out my Old Farmer's Almanac 2008-2009 Winter Predictions Guide for detailed information from The Old Farmer's Almanac on the region where you live.
